Gemstones

Department Lead: Sara Andreopoulos

Gemstones consists of 4 classes based at the Downley site. Pupils within Gemstones have a range of needs and all of whom have speech, Language and Communication Needs.

Teaching is supported by a team of therapists who incorporate SaLT and OT strategies and techniques into our everyday teaching and curriculum. We use a bespoke curriculum which incorporates aspects of the National Curriculum but also covers the broader skills which our pupils need to develop.

We work with the pupils to develop their communication skills alongside positive relationships with their peers. Zones of Regulation is used within each class to promote each pupil’s understanding of their own emotions in order to support regulation.

Alongside the curriculum, we focus on each pupil’s individual needs as described in their Education Health & Care Plan (EHCP). We aim to develop the skill needed to prepare our pupils for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences they will encounter in life by offering learning opportunities in a secure, caring environment that recognises the needs and aspirations of each individual.

In addition to in-class learning, pupils also access swimming on site and go off site for Forest School. Pupils also have access to our soft play and rebound therapy areas.
