Rabbit class is a class of nine Year 1 and 2 children who experience a range of moderate to severe learning difficulties. The children follow a creative curriculum which is informed by the national curriculum with a ‘learning through play’ approach from the Early Years Foundation Stage. We have literacy lessons based on a story book linked to our topic. These include opportunities for speaking and listening, phonics, reading and writing skills. We also have maths lessons which include early learning, number, shape, measure and problem solving activities.
Other areas of learning are addressed through a thematic topic approach. Topics change each term and provide opportunities for learning in science, history, geography, computing, art and music. PE takes place weekly. Throughout, emphasis is placed on developing the children’s communication, personal and social, self-help and independence, and physical skills.
The children benefit from regular input from the speech and language, physiotherapy, and occupational therapy teams, in accordance with their statements.
