Beetle class caters a cohort of children with severe learning difficulties from Year 1 and 2. All the children follow EQUALs Semi-Formal curriculum with EYFS ethos and the philosophy of a cross-curricular learning through play approach in a low arousal environment. Alongside this, the children learn key skills through 1:1 adult-led ECHP focus work activities, as well as, other structure session carried out across the department, such as Attention Autism-Bucket, Dough gym and Total Communication approach.
Each day consists of fun, practical, sensory related activities that promote a love of learning while increasing the children’s independence, confidence, self-esteem, social interaction and communication skills. Learning takes place both in the classroom and outdoors. There is a mix of adult led and child-initiated activities. Staff support the children to acquire an understanding of the world around them so that they can begin to develop their imagination, investigation and problem-solving skills.
