Why good attendance at school is important

We all want children and young people to have the best start that they possibly can, so it is important that they attend school regularly. If your child does not attend regularly they may not be able to keep up with the work we do to help them learn and miss the social side of things too. Missing a lot of school affects children’s development across all areas of their lives.

Working to maintain good attendance  helps pupils to understand their day and that there is consistency and routine in their lives. Likewise coming to school and being collected on time is also vital. Arriving late can be very disruptive for your child, the teacher and other pupils in the class.

What should I do if my child is unwell?

 When pupils are ill and unable to attend school, parents are asked to contact us before 9.30 on the first day of absence .  Please keep your child at home for at least 48 hours if they have diarrhoea or vomiting. If your child becomes unwell at school, and is unable to fully participate in the activities, we will telephone you and ask you to collect your child as soon as possible.  If there are difficulties these can be discussed with the Headteacher.

It is the parent’s responsibility to contact both the taxi/bus company and the school to inform them of their child’s absence.  It is not acceptable to send a message via the bus/taxi driver or escort, as this message may not reach the school.

Please let us know if your child has a problem with school or if there are things going on at home that may affect your child at school. Please tell your child’s teacher so we can look at the best way of supporting you.

What about appointments?

We understand that not all appointments can be made outside of school time. If you let us know in advance of routine appointments these can be recorded accurately.

What about special events or additional holiday leave?

Parents are advised that requests for holiday during term time will not be authorised, except in the most exceptional and extenuating circumstances.  If you feel this is the case please apply for additional leave by requesting a form from the office or downloading the form attached.
