Deer class is a class of ten Year 3, 4 and 5 children who experience a range of moderate to severe learning difficulties. The children follow a creative curriculum which is informed by the national curriculum with a ‘learning through play’ approach from the Early Years Foundation Stage. The curriculum is personalised to each and every child to ensure they achieve maximum success in their learning and fosters a ‘have a go’ attitude. Learning is provided through motivating, interactive, hands on sessions. The children have daily literacy and mathematics lessons. Other subjects are taught through a thematic topic based curriculum.
Throughout, emphasis is placed on developing the children’s communication, personal and social, self-help and independence, and physical skills. The children benefit from regular input from the speech and language, physiotherapy, and occupational therapy teams, in accordance with their statements.
