Speech & Language Therapy
The Speech and Language Therapy service at Chiltern Wood works to provide a positive communication environment across the school and to improve and support pupils’ individual oral-motor, speech, language, communication and eating and drinking skills.
The Service is provided by Symbol UK Ltd, a not for profit organisation which provides specialist speech and language therapy services. The speech therapist is based in school three days a week, with two full-time speech therapy assistants.
Our role includes:
- Assessment of pupils and the school communication environment.
- Individual and group treatment
- Class-based intervention
- Participating in the Annual Review and Statementing processes
- Collaborative education planning
- Support and training for school staff and parents
As part of a whole school initiative classes benefit from a weekly session focusing on developing attention skills (called ‘Bucket’ sessions), providing an opportunity to work on listening skills, focus of attention to adult-based activities and turn-taking skills.
Pupils are also supported in school to use a variety of Alternative and Augmentative Communication (AAC) systems, using signs, symbols, picture-exchange, reading, writing and high-tech devices to enhance pupil’s access to communication, and to develop their individual skills.
