Kestrel

Class Teacher:  Magdalena Klodzinska

Senior Support Assistant:  Najat Rajeh-Hunt

Kestrel class is a Key Stage 3 and 4 class. We follow the Equals semi-formal curriculum which responds to students’ individual needs and provides meaningful experiences. The semi-formal curriculum pathway focuses on developing the practical application of skills and knowledge. The learning is organised in half termly topics and the activities are planned to provide opportunities for students to develop the cross curricular understanding.

The functional communication and independence are embedded into the school day. In Kestrel class, we follow a total communication approach to learning where students use their speech, ACC boards, Makaton and PECS to make requests, comment and express their needs. To enhance independent living skills, pupils practise personal care routines, prepare simple meals, set the table for lunch or fold clothes and pair socks. Most of our students work 1:1 with an adult or in small groups to increase the engagement in their learning and chances of meeting the targets.

Our topic is embedded in different subject areas to connect learning and experiences. During circle time, students have an opportunity to explore their feelings; OT sessions help pupils to understand their bodies and learn different regulation strategies. In SRE (Sex and Relationship Education) lessons we predominately focus on learning parts of the body and the changes the body goes through during puberty. In maths, we have lots of fun setting up a shop or a café to practise functional skills. In PE pupils develop their gross motor skills and engage in sensory circuit to support their regulation. We also explore healthy eating and how to look after ourselves. At the end of the week we celebrate students’ achievements during our class assembly.
