Medical Needs
Many of the pupils at Chiltern Wood School have complex medical needs that require the attention and support of our school nurses. For specific individual guidance, please make contact with the office team or your child’s class teacher. General guidance can be found below:
Every pupil at Chiltern Wood requires an individual health care plan (IHCP). This should be updated annually.
Many medical needs such a Epilepsy, Asthma or Anaphylaxis may require and additional health care plan, written by the school nurse team.
Any medicines or creams that need to be administered in school must have an associated permissions form from parents.
All medication should have a prescription label with the child’s name and date of birth.
Teachers will request new medication in advance of when current medication is due to expire.
If a pupil’s life saving medication such as, seizure medication, auto-injector, or inhaler have not been provided to school, the pupil will be sent home.
Illness
Whether your child is well enough for school can be a difficult decision to make, particularly if your young person cannot communicate their needs effectively. Please find some general guidance below for common symptoms and illnesses.
Pupils with a temperature must stay off school until they have been fever-free without anti-pyretic medication (ibuprofen / paracetamol) for 24 hours. A temperature of 38°C or higher is considered a fever.
If your child requires antibiotics due to infection, they must remain at home until 24 hours after the antibiotics have started. Antibiotics must be taken at home unless doses are needed 4 or more times per day. If anti-biotics are needed during school hours, medication must be provided with a prescription label and signed permission form.
If pupils experience sickness or diarrhoea they must stay at home for at least 48 hours after the last episode occurred in order to prevent the spread of infection.
Any medicines or creams that need to be administered in school must have an associated permissions form from parents.
Only medication prescribed to be administered 4 times a day or more should be given in school hours. Medication prescribed three times a day should be given before school, after school and before bedtime.
